When a critical portion of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged, We may recommend use of an inlay or onlay.
Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain or gold alloy. They are cemented or bonded to the prepared tooth, replacing the critical missing portion. An inlay is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to the inlay, but extending out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. In some cases where damage is not extensive enough to merit an entire crown, onlays can provide an excellent alternative.
